Furthermore supporting the idea of the ocean monument being of religious significance is the fact they're called ELDER guardians. Elder being the word used to describe a person of authority in a Christian Church. I'm aware Islam and Christianity aren't the same but they have a TON of similarities. There being only a few elders but a ton of normal guardians indicates this monuments power structure is similar to that of a church. :) But that's just a thought

In the treasure room, there are the eight gold blocks, and Mat stated the temple was dedicated to worship some type of god.
